Last week, I tested how five local businesses appear in AI search results. A restaurant that's been serving Ann Arbor since 1953 - with 2,000 Google reviews and a 4.2-star rating - got buried at #3 in AI recommendations because of a 1.0-star rating discrepancy between Google and Yelp.
An auto shop with 4.8 stars on Google? Ranked dead last (#5 of 5) because AI pulled from Yelp's 3.3-star rating instead.
These businesses didn't suddenly get worse. But while they focused on Google dominance, AI search started weighing different data sources. Rating fragmentation between platforms is confusing AI systems so badly that decades of reputation-building becomes irrelevant overnight.

The auto shop story was worse. Google shows 4.8 stars - nearly perfect. But AI ranked them last because it pulled Yelp's 3.3-star rating from just 34 reviews. Decades of satisfied customers, destroyed by 34 Yelp reviews they probably didn't know existed.
This isn't about bad businesses. It's about businesses playing by yesterday's rules.

The survivors aren't the best at what they do. They're the fastest to recognize when the game changes and adapt before everyone else figures it out.

1. What's the new discovery behavior? Don't ask what the platform wants. Ask how your customers' search behavior is actually changing. Restaurant example: "My target customers are asking AI assistants 'what's the best burger place?' instead of scrolling Google Maps results."
2. Where does your current strength become a weakness? Identify platform dependencies that worked yesterday but hurt you today. Auto shop example: "My 4.8 Google rating means nothing if AI pulls from my neglected 3.3 Yelp profile with 34 reviews."
3. What's your minimum viable presence in the new system? Define the smallest action that makes you discoverable while you learn the new rules.

Test your discoverability: Search for your business type in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude
Document rating discrepancies across Google, Yelp, Facebook, industry-specific platforms
Prioritize platforms where gaps hurt your AI search ranking
Create consistent presence across platforms AI references, not just where you get the most traffic
The businesses auditing their cross-platform presence now will dominate their categories for the next decade. It’s time to go.
